Accompaniment & Structure Standard
English Breakfast Standard
This standard defines which traditional accompaniments may be included with a full English breakfast and how they relate to the core components of the dish. It establishes the supporting role of accompaniments in the overall structure of a full English breakfast under the English Breakfast Society's framework.
Accompaniments such as baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast may be included alongside the core components of a full English breakfast. These items contribute balance, substance, and completeness to the plate, but they do not define the breakfast. The presence of accompaniments cannot compensate for the absence of core components, nor can they elevate a partial breakfast to a full English.
A breakfast may fail to qualify where the selection or treatment of accompaniments materially alters the character or structure of the dish. This includes excessive reliance on accompaniments that overwhelm or displace the core components, or substitutions that shift the breakfast away from its recognised English form.
This standard concerns composition and structure rather than quality. It does not prescribe specific accompaniments, portion sizes, or preparation methods. Its purpose is to ensure that accompaniments support the core components of the breakfast, rather than redefining or replacing them.
